The Channelled Substrate: Physical Constraints on Biological Variation

Recent advances in evolutionary biology increasingly recognize the role of biophysical determinism alongside historical contingency in shaping genomic variation (e.g., Starr et al. 2017). Building on this momentum, I propose 'Constraint-Governed Variation', a theoretical framework arguing that immutable physical laws—thermodynamics, gravity, and fluid dynamics—fundamentally structure the accessible probability space of evolution, biasing genomic outcomes toward predictable attractors. I synthesize evidence across biological scales to demonstrate physics as a pervasive constraint shaping complexity. First, I review thermodynamic constraints, demonstrating that mutations exhibit predictable physicochemical signatures. Empirical data suggest a boundary constraint: short lifespans permit volatile genomes, while extreme longevity correlates with buffered, expanded non-coding architectures. Second, biomechanical constraints are examined. The energetic demands of powered flight impose a strict upper limit on genome size in volant vertebrates, whereas terrestrial plants, constrained by soil interface physics and hydraulic buffering, exhibit massive genomic expansion. Third, I frame complex innate behaviours (e.g., migration) and adaptation to anthropogenic niches as the deterministic navigation of physical fields and thermodynamic gradients. I conclude that evolutionary convergence is often the result of unrelated species solving identical physical equations. By integrating physics into evolutionary theory, I argue variation is a structured physical process where mutational pathways are chemically channelled by universal laws, a macro-evolutionary pattern warranting further testing via phylogenetically controlled models.
