White adipocyte thermogenesis is not an artefact but an in vivo phenomenon

White adipocyte lipolysis is known to fuel thermogenesis, but it has been unclear whether white adipocytes themselves are thermogenic. We provide evidence that white adipocyte uncoupling via fatty acid interaction with the ATP/ADP carriers is a thermogenic process that occurs in vivo on the activation of lipolysis and is independent of both brown fat and muscle activity.

Abstract

White adipocyte lipolysis is known to fuel thermogenesis, but it has been unclear whether white adipocytes themselves are thermogenic. We provide evidence that white adipocyte uncoupling via fatty acid interaction with the ATP/ADP carriers is a thermogenic process that occurs in vivo on the activation of lipolysis and is independent of both brown fat and muscle activity.
