Transforming supply chain resilience in smart manufacturing: unveiling the impact of technological innovation through cIPMA

Purpose Supply chain resilience (SCR) is essential for firms to survive and thrive in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. This study explores how VUCA conditions affect SCR through the mediating roles of Blockchain Adoption (BA) and Business Intelligence (BI), and the moderating effect of Technological Readiness (TR). Design/methodology/approach Based on the dynamic capability view (DCV), the study examines resilience built through digital capabilities. A structured model is tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to examine direct, mediating, and moderating relationships. The Combined Importance-Performance Map Analysis (cIPMA) is additionally applied to identify improvement priorities. Data are collected from 316 respondents across four Chinese smart manufacturing firms. Findings Results reveal that BA and BI significantly mediate the impact of VUCA on SCR, while TR positively moderates this relationship. These results suggest that the adoption of technology and the development of data-driven capabilities enhance firms' adaptability, transparency, and resilience under uncertain conditions. Originality/value This study develops and empirically validates an integrated framework connecting VUCA, BA, BI, and TR within the context of SCR. It extends the DCV to digital transformation and provides actionable insights for managers to strengthen resilience through TR and intelligent decision-making.
