Cultural Record Governance Case Study––Informal Phrase Genesis and Post-Commercial Attribution Drift

This case study documents the early-2000s emergence of a recurring illustrated lexicon within a Hollywood Alcoholics Anonymous creative milieu and situates that material in relation to the later commercial deployment of the phrase “Denim Tears.” Drawing on reproduced archival artifacts and participant testimony, the study compares documented subcultural usage (c. 2000–2004) with subsequent public media narratives describing the brand’s naming. The analysis does not assert legal claims or causation; rather, it examines how origin narratives become stabilized within media systems after commercial consolidation. By placing distinct evidentiary formations into the public record, the paper advances a framework of cultural record governance concerned with preserving archival continuity when informal creative production precedes commercial circulation.
