Hinton's Taxonomy of AI Risks: From Human Misuse to Existential Threat A Critical Analysis of the Godfather of AI Warning
Geoffrey Hinton’s Dual Taxonomy of AI Risks: A Critical Analysis Geoffrey Hinton, laureate of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics and widely recognized as the “Godfather of AI” for his pioneering work on artificial neural networks and deep learning, has systematically articulated a dual taxonomy of risks associated with artificial intelligence:(1) those arising from human misuse, and(2) those stemming from the potential emergence of superintelligent systems. This paper provides a critical analysis of Hinton’s risk framework as expressed in his long-form interview on The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett, cross-referencing his positions with the most recent empirical literature from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Economic Forum (WEF), and leading AI safety researchers.
