Simulation of an Urban Flood Storage Tunnel System

Urban flood disasters are caused by frequent heavy rains, presumably due to rapid urbanization and climate change. During torrential rain, multi-use underground spaces located in areas vulnerable to flooding can fill rapidly, resulting in significant property damage and severe threats to human life. As a structural approach to urban flood mitigation, underground rainwater storage structures represent an effective strategy for preventing or reducing flood-related damage. Accordingly, a simulation was performed using the Storm Water Management Model that enables rainfall-runoff simulation, including rainwater storage facilities in urban areas. The results showed that the distributed installation of underground storage structures was highly effective in alleviating flooding. The simulation demonstrated the applicability of the underground storage structure as a flood mitigation system. Considering the reinforcement technique of the improved structure, rainwater storage structures that were distributed and arranged were constructed, and their effects were compared and analyzed.
