The effect of conversational chatbots on social innovation: mediation through entrepreneurial grit

Purpose Conversational artificial intelligence has established itself as a key driver of social and economic development. Previous research highlights its key role in stimulating innovation. However, the study of the impact of these technological tools on social innovation remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, this study examines the effect of conversational chatbots on social innovation, with a particular focus on the mediating role of entrepreneurial grit. Design/methodology/approach This study uses the PLS-SEM method in a quantitative research design to explore the causal links between the variables in the model. The empirical analysis examines a sample of 119 Tunisian social entrepreneurs receiving support from business start-up organizations. Tunisia, a key emerging country in the Euro-Mediterranean region, is a particularly relevant case to understand social innovation. Findings Our results show that conversational chatbots have a positive effect on social innovation. In addition, the mediating effect of entrepreneurial persistence and perseverance is confirmed. These results underline the importance of these technological tools in maintaining the commitment of young social entrepreneurs, supporting their efforts throughout their entrepreneurial adventure. Research limitations/implications Deciphering the mechanisms that foster social innovation is crucial for researchers and practitioners alike. Our study explores how conversational technologies can stimulate innovation in social contexts, focusing in particular on the impact of entrepreneurial grit among key psychological and entrepreneurial factors. Originality/value The results of this study reveal the key role played by chatbots, or conversational artificial intelligence, in sustaining social innovation. These technologies appear to be levers for developing essential entrepreneurial skills, opening up a new perspective compared to previous research that focused mainly on their contribution to the technical dimension of innovation.
