Patience and protocol: Advice to newly hired child welfare workers from experienced colleagues regarding challenging cases
This study examined advice experienced child welfare workers offer to newly hired colleagues for managing exceptionally challenging cases, guided by the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) model. Using data from the Florida Study of Professionals for Safe Families, researchers analyzed quantitative and qualitative responses from workers with approximately three years of tenure. Over 75% identified procedural demands of the case as more challenging than emotional strain. Advice clustered into four themes: leveraging support networks; adhering to procedures; cultivating persistence, adaptability, time management, and self-care; and engaging clients with empathy and boundaries. Findings highlight the role of organizational resources in buffering high demands and promoting workforce sustainability.
