Effect of cutting edge preparation by drag finishing on the tool wear in milling of steel

Cutting edge preparation by drag finishing is widely employed to refine cutting edge microgeometry and extend tool life, particularly in the machining of different steel alloys. This study investigates the influence of different abrasive media used in the drag finishing process on the cutting edge microgeometry and wear behavior of cemented carbide end mills during the milling of AISI P20 and SAE 4140 steels. The objective is to evaluate the effects of abrasive media and to contribute to the development of alternative solutions aimed at improving cutting tool performance. The results indicate that, in general, tools subjected to edge preparation exhibit longer tool life than unprepared (sharpened) tools. The results for the different steels tested also show some variations. Furthermore, an alternative abrasive media was also tested in the dragging process, and it showed that there are still great opportunities for development in this area. The main mechanisms and types of wear are still the traditional ones; however, the lifespan of tools treated by dragging is usually longer.
