Harnessing green humble leadership to foster green creativity through moderated-mediation model

Purpose The present research investigates the role of Green Humble Leadership (GHL) in Green Creativity (GC) in the hotel industry. The study combines both the Social Exchange Theory (SET) and the Conservation of Resources Theory (COR) to comprehend the role of Green Humble Leadership (GHL) in developing creative and sustainable solutions within an environment that is eco-oriented. Design/methodology/approach The study analyses data of 274 employees of a hotel in Swat region of Pakistan in a moderated-mediation model. Green Work Engagement (GWE) is viewed as a mediator whereas Perceived Organizational Support (POS) is viewed as a moderator in the relationship between Green Humble Leadership (GHL) and Green Creativity (GC). Findings The results indicate that Green Humble Leadership (GHL) also has a considerable effect on Green Work Engagement (GWE) and Green Creativity (GC). Nevertheless, overindulgence in green work can cause depletion of resources, and this will diminish resourcefulness. The Perceived Organizational Support (POS) increases the impact of Green Humble Leadership (GHL) on Green Creativity (GC) by increasing the role of Green Work Engagement (GWE), meaning the relevance of supportive organizational structures. Practical implications This research paper underlines the two fold functions of Green Humble Leadership (GHL) as a factor that contributes to Green Creativity (GC) green creativity, and it also indicates the limitations that may be brought about by overworking. It proposes that companies encourage the eco-innovation through balancing leadership practices with sufficient support systems that will guarantee continued creativity. Originality/value The study supplements the existing body of knowledge on leadership by showing the multi-faceted interaction between leadership, engagement and creativity in sustainable hospitality. It contributes to the green leadership discourse by suggesting a new emphasis from transformational or empowering styles to a humility-based approach. In addition, it addresses the previously unexplored paradox of overworking while engaged in eco-innovative activities, but considering a developing country in terms of tourism.
