Data and Code for: Permafrost stabilization prevents climate tipping points on the warming Tibetan Plateau
1. Overview This repository contains the processed datasets and custom analysis scripts used in the manuscript "Permafrost stabilization prevents climate tipping points on the warming Tibetan Plateau". The study investigates the spatial-temporal overlap between permafrost distribution and residual temperature anomalies (such as persistent cold anomalies) across the Tibetan Plateau from 1940 to 2023. 2. File Inventory The repository consists of the following compressed archives: code.zip: Contains the custom scripts (written in Python) used for data processing, statistical analysis (e.g., STL decomposition), and generating the main figures in the manuscript (e.g., spatial patterns of sliding annual mean residual temperature). 2m_temperature.zip, t2m_1and-1.zip, and t2m_STL1940.zip: Contain the processed 2-meter temperature datasets derived from the ERA5 reanalysis. These files include the long-term temperature records (starting from 1940), extracted residual temperature anomalies, and STL (Seasonal-Trend decomposition) components used to identify extreme cold grid points. TP-tjaele.7z: Contains the processed spatial data regarding permafrost distribution and thermal stability zones across the Tibetan Plateau. 3. Original Data Sources The raw ERA5 hourly data on single levels (1940-present) were obtained from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Climate Data Store (https://doi.org/10.24381/cds.adbb2d47). The raw permafrost distribution dataset (Ran et al., 2021) was provided by the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center (TPDC) (https://doi.org/10.11888/Geogra.tpdc.270672). 4. Usage Notes To reproduce the results, please extract all the data archives into the designated input directory as specified within the scripts in code.zip.
