The Biological and Ethological Foundations of the Sacred Ibis Symbolism in Ancient Egyptian Theology
Abstract / الملخص This paper explores the deep correlation between the biological and ethological characteristics of the African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) and its theological symbolism as the earthly manifestation of the moon god Thoth in ancient Egypt. By integrating ornithological data, archaeological evidence, Hermopolitan theology, and recent archaeometric studies (DNA and stable isotopes), the study posits that the Egyptian priesthood's designation of the ibis was not arbitrary. Instead, it was the result of systematic, long-term ethological observation within temple breeding colonies.
