The Inadvertent Use of Weight-loss Medications may Result in Adverse Health Outcomes

Inadvertent and inappropriate use of weight-loss medications is an emerging public health concern, particularly in the absence of adequate medical supervision.Such practices may result in adverse health outcomes and compromise the safe and effective use of pharmacological interventions for obesity management. We highlight findings from a recent systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the risks and health implications of uncontrolled use of weight-loss medications.Evidence indicates that although newer incretin-based therapies produce effective weight loss, discontinuation is commonly associated with rapid weight regain and loss of metabolic benefits. These findings underscore the need to position anti-obesity medications within supervised, long-term weight management strategies rather than short-term use.
