Is shooting of cormorants in Danish waters adding to the population decline of the carbo sub-species in Norway?
In Denmark, hunters have shot between 4,680 and 9,060 cormorants annually since 2017/18 under official derogation permits approved by the Danish authorities. From 2022 to 2024, Aarhus University investigated the subspecies composition of culled cormorants in Denmark to assess to what extent Norwegian Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo carbo) were included in the hunting bag. While the Danish breeding population consists entirely of the continental subspecies (Ph. c. sinensis), many Norwegian birds (Ph. c. carbo) migrate to Denmark during autumn and winter and may then be subject to derogation shooting in Danish waters.
