Linking Sustainability Metrics to Business Outcomes: A Case Study of Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan
Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) exemplifies the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics into corporate strategy. This case study examines the impact of sustainability initiatives on operational efficiency, financial performance, and stakeholder engagement. Key metrics analyzed include greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, waste management, sustainable product revenue, and social indicators such as employee diversity and community programs. Data were collected from company sustainability reports, ESG disclosures, and industry analyses. The findings indicate that targeted sustainability interventions not only reduced environmental footprint—GHG emissions decreased by 65% per ton of production—but also generated tangible business outcomes, including cost savings, revenue growth, and enhanced brand reputation. The study demonstrates a quantifiable link between systematic sustainability metric monitoring and strategic business benefits, offering a replicable model for FMCG and other industries.
