A case of ameloblastoma with dystrophic calcification in a hemodialyzed patient
Dystrophic calcification is one of the most frequently observed complications in hemodialyzed patients with chronic renal failure.Dystrophic calcification is related to many factors such as hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. It occurs in various organs, and treatment of highly advanced calcified lesions is difficult. We describe a case of dystrophic calcification within an ameloblastoma in a hemodialyzed patient. The patient was a 72-year-old woman. In November 2021, she was referred to our department for detailed evaluation and treatment after a multilocular radiolucent lesion of the left side of the mandible was noted at a nearby dental clinic. The initial CT scan showed a well-defined multifocal low-absorption area with a maximum diameter of 70 mm and numerous internal high-absorption areas.A biopsy was performed in January 2022 under local anesthesia, and the pathological diagnosis was ameloblastoma and calcification. In June, the patient underwent a jawbone tumor excision and curettage under general anesthesia, and numerous calcifications were found within the lesion.Elemental analysis of the calcified material revealed high levels of calcium and phosphorus, consistent with ectopic calcification in dialysis patients.
