Mechanical Properties and Structure of Welded Joints of Al–Ca–Mg Aluminum Alloy Sheets Made by Argon Arc Welding

The mechanical properties of welded joints of sheets of an aluminum alloy of the Al–Ca–Mg system, alloyed with zirconium and scandium, produced by automatic argon-arc welding were investigated. Two variants of argon-arc welding were used: without pulse modulation and with pulses superimposed on the arc. The tensile strength of welded joints of sheets of the Al–Ca–Mg alloy system without internal defects in the welds is at the level of 0.82–0.85 of the ultimate tensile strength of the base metal. In this case, failure of the specimen in tensile testing occurs in the fusion zone. If defects in the form of pores are present in the weld metal, the value of tensile strength decreases to 0.74–0.79 of the base metal strength, with joint failure during tests occurring through the weld metal.
