Effect of stretching exercises on muscle cramp, pain and fatigue among patients on hemodialysis
Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious health problem and it considered as the 12th leading cause of death worldwide, it could lead to many complications as muscle cramps, fatigue, and pain. Therefore, stretching exercise is considered as one of the most effective interventions used to treat muscle cramps, fatigue, and pain. It helps to increase the patient’s muscular endurance and strength. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the effect of stretching exercises on muscle cramps, pain, and fatigue among patients on hemodialysis (HD). Design A quasi-experimental one group pre, post-test research design was utilized in the current study. Sample A convenience sample of 30 adult male and female patients on HD treatment was recruited in the current study. Tools Four tools were utilized to collect data: (a) Personal and Medical Data Form, (b) Modified Piper Fatigue Scale, (c) Cramp Questionnaire Chart, (d) Pain Numeric Rating Scale. Results There is a statistically significant difference in muscle cramp, pain, and fatigue after applying stretching exercise when comparing to before. Conclusion The stretching exercise is a noninvasive procedure with low costs, and it had a positive effect in reducing muscle cramps, pain, and fatigue among patients on HD. Recommendations Conducting further studies to teach patients on HD in early stages of disease about alternative nonpharmacological interventions for muscle cramps, pain, and fatigue.
