Aliphatic Alcohol Blended MDEA Solutions for Improved COS Removal: Inspired From Mechanistic Studies on CO 2 and COS Absorption

ABSTRACT COS removal from natural gas is one of the crucial challenges in gas purification. The present study separately investigated the 13 C NMR characterizations and absorption kinetics of CO 2 and COS by aqueous MDEA solution, and the results indicated that their absorptions may proceed by similar absorption mechanism. Inspired by the solubility limited COS absorption kinetics, a list of C 4 ‐C 6 aliphatic alcohols blended MDEA solutions were explored for COS and CO 2 absorption. It was found that they could improve the COS absorption capacity much better than similar sulfolane blended MDEA solution, and specially, they could improve the absorption selectivity of COS over CO 2 . For example, under the identical conditions, using n ‐hexanol blended MDEA solution achieved 4.0 M concentration of the HCO 3 − anion for COS absorption vs 1.2 M for the sulfolane blended MDEA solution, while it was 3.4 M vs 4.8 M for CO 2 absorption by n ‐hexanol vs sulfolane blended MDEA solution.
