Liposomes: Bridging the Gap between Biology and Drug Delivery

Abstract: Targeted pharmaceutical distribution is an important development in modern medicine. This is especially true for tough conditions like cancer, infections, and genetic disorders. We need better drug delivery systems because regular drugs can sometimes be non-specific, break down too quickly, or become toxic at high doses. Liposomes are spherical vesicles made of phospholipid layers. They are a popular option because they can carry both water-loving and water-repelling drugs, are safe for the body, and break down naturally. By engineering liposomes, new formulations have been created, such as PEGylated and ligand-targeted liposomes. These liposomes increase circulation time and ensure that drugs are delivered to the right tissues, which improves therapeutic indices and reduces systemic toxicity. Liposomes are not perfect. They are not stable, they don't last long, and they cost a lot to make. There are many different kinds of liposomes, such as conventional, pH-sensitive, cationic, stealth, immuno-, magnetic, and temperature-sensitive liposomes. Each type has a different way of working and is used in medicine for different things. This paper looks at how liposomal drug delivery works, how to describe them, and how liposomal formulations have gotten better over time. It also talks about how they can help improve pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Ultimately, liposomes provide a versatile method for targeted drug delivery within the body. They have a lot of potential to make treatments safer and more effective, which could lead to better outcomes for patients.
