THE ROLE OF SAFETY CLIMATE AND PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT IN TRANSPORT SECTOR ROAD SAFETY

Road accidents remain a persistent global challenge, significantly impacting public health, safety, and economic stability. In recent years, the frequency and severity of road traffic incidents have raised serious concerns, especially in the transport sector. Perceptions of safety climate and levels of employee engagement predict safety behaviour through SPM mechanisms, and how these ultimately relate to road injury outcomes. The findings support a non-symmetric, compensatory relationship between extrinsic and intrinsic safety performance factors, consistent with existing meta-analytic literature. Results indicate that while both climate-induced extrinsic SPM and engagement-induced intrinsic SPM influence improved road safety practices, extrinsic factors derived from organizational climate have a more pronounced impact on measurable road injury outcomes.
