Co-Development of Tools to Promote Cognitive Health by and for People Aged 50 and Over

The increase in the prevalence of neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) among older adults represents a major health challenge. Although the risk factors associated with NCDs and the protective factors for cognitive health are well documented, access to this information remains limited, notably due to disparate levels of health literacy. The aim of this study was to identify the cognitive health promotion needs of people aged 50 and over, to co-develop suitable tools, and to evaluate their impact. Using the Knowledge To Action (KTA) model, this participatory action research (PAR) was carried out in three phases: 1) a literature search to identify current evidence concerning cognitive health promotion and the prevention of NCDs, 2) a synthesis of the available evidence tailored to the knowledge users, and 3) a needs assessment and the creation of knowledge tools and products. Three brochures were developed targeting the needs identified by the knowledge user participants. Participants highlighted the usefulness of the knowledge transfer (KT) tools and products compared to existing resources. However, the study demonstrates that information needs vary between individuals, mainly because of socioeconomic diversity. Therefore, a combination of strategies and knowledge tools and products is required to meet the different needs of people aged 50 and over. This study highlights the importance of co-designing personalized tools to improve the accessibility and comprehension of information on NCDs, thus contributing to better prevention and promotion of cognitive health among the older adults.
