A review of thermal performance analysis and optimization research on automotive disc brakes

The thermal performance of disc brakes is a significant factor in the stability of the automotive’s braking performance which has an essential effect on braking safety. With the widespread application of disc brakes on a variety of vehicles, the issue of braking efficiency degradation caused by the thermal stability of disc brakes under special or extreme working conditions has garnered the focus of an increasing number of researchers in recent years. This paper provides a summary of recent researches on the thermal performance and heat dissipation optimization of automotive disc brakes. It primarily analyzes the work conducted by researchers in various areas, including brake disc temperature calculation and monitoring, brake disc material, brake disc and vehicle component structure, brake process parameters, brake lining, as well as brake thermal performance experimental bench. The paper categorizes, compares, and analyzes different research methods and offers insights into future research directions for improving the thermal performance of disc brakes. Additionally, a perspective on future research and ultimately offers theoretical backing for optimising and enhancing the thermal stability of disc brakes is offered in this paper.
