Linking Life Cycle Thinking Science and Practice: A Comprehensive Sustainability Assessment Tool for Food Loss and Waste Prevention and Reduction Actions
Food loss and waste prevention and reduction (FLWPR) initiatives are key for advancing sustainable agri-food systems. Yet, organizations are under growing pressure to implement data-driven sustainability management practices, while existing assessment tools often prove analytically complex and lack practical usability. The objective of this study is to develop and empirically test a comprehensive sustainability assessment tool designed to support decision-making within FLWPR initiatives. The tool was operationalized through a collaborative process involving experts and potential users and integrates key performance indicators (KPIs) based on a life cycle thinking approach. It was tested in a real-world scenario focused on enhancing logistics and storage in a school canteen management company. The resulting tool includes a suite of operational resources (KPIs map, KPIs sheets, gathering data surveys, methods and models for the assessment) facilitating its practical implementation. This contribution enables more effective strategic management based on LCSA results, facilitating better understanding and data-driven decision-making by various actors in the food supply chain. By identifying sustainability hotspots and associated risks within FLWPR actions, the tool promotes continuous improvement and enhances the overall impact of interventions.
