An efficient variant of the venerable Fischer indole synthesis featuring the direct use of carboxylic acids as aldehyde surrogates was developed. The utility of this protocol was demonstrated by the one‐pot synthesis of a series of 3‐substituted indoles and 3,5‐, 3,6‐, 3,7‐disubstituted derivatives. This work would inspire chemists to develop other non‐decarboxylative transformations of carboxylic acids. More details are discussed in the article by Huang et al . on pages 795—803. image

Abstract

An efficient variant of the venerable Fischer indole synthesis featuring the direct use of carboxylic acids as aldehyde surrogates was developed. The utility of this protocol was demonstrated by the one‐pot synthesis of a series of 3‐substituted indoles and 3,5‐, 3,6‐, 3,7‐disubstituted derivatives. This work would inspire chemists to develop other non‐decarboxylative transformations of carboxylic acids. More details are discussed in the article by Huang et al . on pages 795—803. image
