Abstract: This article presents an analysis of the performativity of words in the plays Creditors and Father by Swedish playwright Johan August Strindberg. The examination focuses primarily on the “battle of wits” between characters whose only weapon is “verbal cruelty.” The aim is to trace the evolution of the characters from the establishment of a system of debt as a means of distorting the initial symmetry of their relationships to the point of no return, namely “psychological murder.” The aim is to analyze the discursive mechanisms and manipulation strategies specific to the characters and their psychological implications for the victims' inner selves, which weaken as the story progresses until their final destruction. The study shows the power of words in the psychological battle waged by the protagonists. They emerge as weapons that induce a schism in inner will and the creation of “generalized nonsense.” Keywords: verbal cruelty, performativity, psychological murder, debt, disintegration
