An integrated strategic optimization model of production and crop rotation planning for sustainable tropical fruit supply chain planning

Purpose The model considers multiple aspects of the production process, including multicultivation planning, multifertilizer injection scheduling and crop rotation planning. The proposed model is formulated using mixed-integer linear programming and aims to maximize the farmer’s net profit. In addition, the model is tested on a real case study from the southern region of Thailand, with numerical results presented to demonstrate its effectiveness compared to actual practices. Design/methodology/approach The tropical fruit supply chain planning is characterized by long supply lead times, significant supply and demand uncertainties and relatively thin margins. These challenges necessitate management efficiency and the adoption of modern decision technology tools. This paper contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive supply chain production planning model for Queen pineapple cultivation, one of Thailand’s most important tropical fruits. Findings Overall, this proposed model provides a useful tool for farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector to optimize their production process and increase profitability. Originality/value This research applies operations research and supply chain management to develop a natural tropical fruit supply chain network in Thailand. The model considers multiple aspects of the entire production process of Queen pineapple cultivation, including multicultivation planning, multifertilizer injection scheduling and crop rotation planning.
