Experimental investigation of vapor pvT properties and PC-SAFT equations of state for renewable methanol and ethanol at elevated temperatures

As methanol and ethanol have been extensively investigated to reduce global carbon emission and to optimize energy consumption, having reliable thermodynamic properties and suitable EoS became fundamental for further scientific research and industrial applications. Herein, vapor pvT properties of both alcohols were measured by using a Burnett apparatus in the temperature range from (473.15 to 598.15) K and at pressures up to 8.7 MPa. A truncated virial equation of state was employed to discuss these experimental results and elucidate the influence of temperature and pressure on volumetric properties. Furthermore, vapor pvT data and second virial coefficients in this work were in satisfactory agreement with their published values in literature. Based on the available datasets of thermodynamic properties, PC-SAFT EoSs combined with 2B and 3B association schemes for methanol and ethanol have been established in the wide temperature and pressure ranges. Their PC-SAFT EoSs + 2B can accurately calculate vapor pressure, liquid and vapor densities, liquid and vapor isobaric heat capacities with average absolute deviations of (1.22%, 0.55%, 1.83%, 2.29%, 3.99%) and (0.92%, 0.30%, 1.02%, 2.65%, 2.97%), respectively. Compared with the original PC-SAFT EoSs + 2B, thermodynamic models of methanol and ethanol in this work have demonstrated satisfactory improvements in predictive performance. • Experimental vapor pvT properties of methanol and ethanol were investigated. • A truncated virial equation of state was employed to analyze experimental results. • PC-SAFT EoS with 2B and 3B schemes of methanol and ethanol were established. • Predictive performances of thermodynamic model were comprehensively discussed.
