Winning Fairly: Strategic Resilience of SMEs in the Face of Informal Competition
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face unfair competition from shadow-economy actors who evade taxes, regulation, and compliance costs. This study examines how formal SMEs can transform compliance into both resilience and competitive advantage by embedding strategic management principles into their strategic responses. Through SWOT analysis, stakeholder mapping, and Porter’s Five Forces, the research identifies the structural disadvantages faced by compliant firms (higher costs, slower bureaucracy, intense price rivalry) alongside the unique assets they possess (credibility, legal protection, reputational capital). These insights are integrated into the management cycle of planning, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and adapting, producing a coherent roadmap of actionable strategies. Findings emphasize that sustainable positioning depends on trust-based differentiation, transparent value creation, digital adoption, and strong stakeholder collaboration, while continuous assessment ensures adaptability in evolving environments. The article contributes conceptually and practically by demonstrating that fair competition is achievable when SMEs view compliance as the cornerstone of long-term success.
