Evaluation of the Thevetia peruviana extract and the predatory Orius albidipennis for the control of Thrips tabaci (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on strawberry in Egypt

Thrips tabaci is a major pest threatening strawberries worldwide, including Egypt. Two field trials were conducted in Qalyubia Governorate in 2024 and 2025 to test three control strategies: Thevetia peruviana leaf extract (bi pesticide), the release of the predator Orius albidipennis (10 individuals / m²), and the pesticide Imidacloprid. Results showed that both the predator and the biopesticide achieved an effective control of thrips on two strawberry cultivars (Fortuna and Festival). Imidacloprid achieved the highest reduction (> 83%). These results suggest that T. peruviana extract and O. albidipennis can be sustainable and environmentally friendly components of strawberry IPM programmes.
