Sheep worrying by dogs
THE National Sheep Association (NSA) has recently launched its annual survey into sheep worrying by dogs, an issue that continues to cause serious and distressing consequences for animal welfare and farming communities across the UK. This year, for the first time, the survey is aimed directly at dog owners, whose views and experiences are vital in addressing the problem. “Beyond the direct harm to livestock, these incidents also inflict significant emotional and financial strain on farmers The NSA is now inviting dog owners from across the UK to take part in the survey, which will remain open until 9 March. It also asks veterinary professionals to encourage clients to take part. Survey results will be shared in the spring with interested parties, including the national press. This timing is particularly important, as many ewes are heavily pregnant or caring for young lambs, when the risks of miscarriage or mismothering caused by stress are at their highest. An awareness week will run from 30 March–6 April 2026. To take part in the survey, and for further information about sheep worrying by dogs, please visit the NSA's website at www.sheepworrying.org.uk
