Improving the Interior Setting of the Natural Dye Batik Production House for the Batik Craftswomen Community

This study aimed to explore the motivations underlying the activities of batik craftswomen, document the production process, evaluate the weaknesses and space needs at each stage, and examine the discomforts experienced by them. A qualitative method was employed to achieve the objectives, focusing on three main aspects: space needs, craftswomen’s experiences, and comfort. This was followed by in-depth interviews with five female batik craftswomen who also worked as rollers at a cigarette manufacturer, before transitioning into batik-making at Sanggar Batik Batara (Batara Batik Making Center) in Pasuruan, Indonesia. Subsequently, data were collected from informants through observations and documentation of production activities. Thematic analysis was used to group themes from observation and interviews, particularly aspects of space and craftswomen’s experiences. Data triangulation was employed through interviews, observations, and documentation to enhance validity and consistency. The results showed that systematic data recording over one year achieved high reliability, with cross-checking among informants to ensure an accurate reflection of the realities faced by craftswomen. In the future, these results are expected to serve as a baseline for policymakers, designers, and stakeholders who aim to create a better working environment. By addressing spatial and ergonomic challenges, future interventions could improve well-being, ensure sustainable production practices, and contribute to the long-term preservation of batik as an important cultural heritage.
