Modelling a STATCOM with Limited Energy Storage and PV Generation to Provide Grid Forming Capability to Enhance the Stability of a Distribution Grid
STATCOM technology was proposed three decades ago to address the voltage instability of power systems by employing standalone power electronics that can produce the required amounts of reactive powers whilst absorbing only the losses. Newer challenges for power system stability require grid forming capabilities to be available and since some of these require more significant amounts of energy and active power, integration of limited energy storage and also small amount of renewable energy generation to cover losses and provide black start, becomes necessary. This paper will evaluate by simulations the capabilities of a STATCOM with integrated limited energy storage and PV generation to provide grid forming capabilities
