A Compact High-Voltage Pulse Generator Using Series-Connected Mosfets and a Non-Isolated Boost Converter

The method of generating high-voltage (HV) pulses plays a crucial role in pulse power systems, directly determining their performance and reliability. Various implementation approaches involve trade-offs among size, flexibility, cost, efficiency, pulse fidelity, and overall robustness. This paper presents the design and realization of an ultrafast HV nanosecond pulse generator using series-connected MOSFETs as the switching module and a non-isolated boost converter. Key features include active fall-time control, compact and low-cost construction, inherent voltage boost, and ultrafast switching capability. Experimental results verify reliable operation with output voltages, repetition rates, and pulse widths of 10 kV, 10 kHz, and 60-600 ns, respectively, achieving a boosted output voltage up to twice the input level.
