Nursing care provided to a diabetic feline patient undergoing a dental procedure with extractions
Diabetic patients require careful consideration and specialised care when undergoing routine procedures due to the numerous systemic health impacts associated with the condition. Veterinary nurses hold a significant amount of responsibility for the perioperative care of such patients. This patient care report discusses the various nursing interventions that were used to ensure that the patient underwent a safe and successful procedure, avoiding potential complications caused by the presence of a comorbidity; in this case, diabetes mellitus. These key interventions included anaesthetic considerations, blood glucose monitoring, stress management techniques, intravenous fluid therapy, comprehensive postoperative pain management and a suitable nutritional plan.
