ASSESSING THE ROLE OF APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE (APIS) IN BUILDING DIGITAL INSURANCE ECOSYSTEMS

The insurance industry is undergoing a significant digital transformation, driven by technological innovations that enable faster, more efficient, and customer-centric operations. Among these technologies, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) have emerged as a key enabler of digital connectivity, interoperability, and innovation. This study examines the role of APIs in building sustainable digital insurance ecosystems, focusing on their impact on operational performance, integration with stakeholders, and customer experience. Using a descriptive and analytical research design, data was collected from 50 insurance companies through surveys and secondary sources. The findings reveal that while 36% of companies have fully integrated APIs and 44% are partially integrated, API adoption has substantially improved key performance indicators, including claims processing time, customer query resolution, product launch speed, and operating costs. The study also identifies significant challenges, including data security concerns, legacy system integration, shortage of skilled IT personnel, high implementation costs, and regulatory compliance. The research concludes that APIs are strategic enablers of efficiency, innovation, and customer-centricity, and their adoption is crucial for insurers aiming to thrive in the evolving digital landscape.
