Base4NFDI Evaluation and Recommendations: Summary of Base4NFDI Response to recent Recommendations as part of External Evaluation by the Technopolis Group

Base4NFDI commissioned the Technopolis Group to carry out a thorough external evaluation of its activities, the results of which were delivered in August 2025. Given the complex nature of Base4NFDI’s project structure, the evaluation process was designed to encompass three distinct levels: the efficiency of project activities and internal organisation, the relevance and coherence of the process for developing a basic service, and the significance of the project for the whole NFDI community. The evaluation employed a mixed-methods approach to capture a comprehensive perspective on Base4NFDI's activities and impact. Key methods included surveys, focus groups, and interviews with a broad range of stakeholders and actors, such as developer teams, consortia spokespersons, NFDI section members, as well as representatives from Base4NFDI, and TEC members. As a result, a comprehensive list of key recommendations were put forward for Base4NFDI to pursue. This report outlines the Base4NFDI team’s structured response to a prioritized selection of the 41 recommendations and the subsequent step-by-step implementation of those measures that are deemed to have a high impact on project success and stakeholder satisfaction. In considering these recommendations, the run-time of Base4NFDI will allow for structural changes, and we hope that this will elevate it to a more flexible and effective approach to designing services in NFDI. The team is grateful for all the feedback and contributions from the NFDI community for their input to the evaluation process.
