Abstract

This study explores how catalysts and inhibitors influence maritime innovation in renewable solutions. Empirical data is drawn from three distinct case studies conducted between September 2017 and June 2018, September 2019 and January 2022, and September 2023 and March 2024.
The findings identify catalysts and inhibitors that shape collaborative innovation within ecosystems. A long-term, ecosystem-centric approach is essential for initiating and sustaining actions that enable open adaptation and value creation among participants. In the team layer, human relationships that embrace and appreciate heterogeneity are vital. It origins in the individual layer, where conscious awareness of the need to make sense of heterogeneous behaviours for future-oriented actions is foundational for innovation success. Conversely, the identified inhibitors demonstrate how collaborative innovation can be undermined.
This research contributes to the insights and actions within academia, governmental and funding bodies, and practitioners, aimed at enhancing innovation ecosystem collaboration for the collective good.
