Fruit flies find warmer fruit a better place to lay eggs
INSIDE JEBFruit flies find warmer fruit a better place to lay eggs When it comes to real estate, it's all about location, location, location, and this isn't only true for humans. For some animals, the decision of where to lay their eggs also comes down to location. For fruit flies such as Drosophila suzukii, which lay their eggs on fruit, the parents need to base their decision on many factors including temperature, quality of food for their offspring and risk of predators. In nature, there is hardly ever an ideal spot with the ideal temperature and the most nutritious food. This begs the question, which factor is the most important when deciding where to lay your eggs?In an attempt to answer this, Wendy Destierdt and Gwenalle Deconninck from the Universit de Tours, France, teamed up with Esteban Moyer, Vincent Foray and Sylvain Pincebourde, also from the Universit de Tours, along with Jos Crespo from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Olivier Chabrerie from the Universit de Picardie Jules Verne, France, to see whether the temperature or tasty fruit was the deciding factor for the fruit flies when it comes to egg-laying location.
