Gravitational Substrate Cosmology A Unified Framework for Forces as Expressions of a Primordial Spacetime Substrate A Formal Theoretical Framework
I propose a unified cosmological framework—Gravitational Substrate Cosmology (GSC)—in which the spacetime substrate (the void, the page) is the primordial reality, and gravity is its fundamental behavior. The substrate represents the most settled state of reality: lowest energy, maximum order. Energy is the excited state—a disturbance on the substrate that the universe is constantly working to resolve. Matter is energy finding form: a temporary expression whose apparent permanence reflects the limits of our observation, not genuine stability. Without energy, matter does not exist—it settles back into substrate. Gravity and energy are anti-states. As the substrate is excited by energy input, electromagnetic behavior precipitates out of gravitational geometry. Magnetism IS energy—the most fundamental expression of the substrate’s excitation. All other forces—weak nuclear, strong nuclear—are not separate phenomena. They are the substrate expressing its single nature under different energy conditions. There is one interaction—between the substrate and the energy exciting it—manifesting differently at different scales and densities. The framework synthesizes three established but previously unconnected programs in theoretical physics: Jacobson’s thermodynamic derivation of the Einstein field equations (1995), the Kaluza-Klein demonstration that electromagnetism is encoded in gravitational geometry (1921–1926), and Verlinde’s emergent gravity program for dark matter phenomenology (2011–2017). The framework connects these through a Landau-Ginzburg order parameter governing the substrate’s thermodynamic settling, with the Kaluza-Klein decomposition describing the electromagnetic output of the settling process. I identify this order parameter with the physical Higgs boson—the radial mode surviving electroweak symmetry breaking—a singlet scalar field, as is the KK modulus. The 125 GeV particle detected at CERN is the radial excitation of the settled structure—the substrate wobbling when struck hard enough. A critical distinction from prior work: nothing in the substrate is frozen, locked, or finished. Every “constant” is still settling—imperceptibly slowly. The fine structure constant is not fixed at 1/137. It is settling toward a value no internal observer can predict. All physical “constants” are settling rates too slow for current instruments to detect drift. Fully settled would mean nonexistence—the substrate with no energy has nothing to express, nothing to observe, nothing to measure. Everything that exists has energy. Matter is what energy looks like when it finds form on the substrate. A constant with energy is a contradiction. The universe is not expanding—it is settling. Time is not a dimension or a background parameter—it is what sequential observation of settling looks like from inside. Clocks do not “measure time”—they count settling cycles of their own substrate. A central result is the determination of the fine structure constant through the settling dynamics. The Landau-Ginzburg order parameter φ controls the effective compactification radius R₅ of the substrate’s internal degree of freedom. When φ settles to its equilibrium value φ₀, R₅ is fixed—not as an arbitrary geometric parameter, but as a deterministic output of the settling. The fine structure constant α = (ℓ_P/R₅)² is therefore a consequence of the settling, not an independent measurement. This version extends the framework in three directions. First, the three generations of charged leptons—electron, muon, tau—are reinterpreted as a single settling mode sampled at three different energy intensities, dissolving the generation puzzle (“Who ordered that?”) into settling geometry. Second, particle creation in collider experiments is reframed: collisions do not create particles from energy but de-settle matter, pushing it toward the symmetric phase, with the spray of detected particles representing re-settling as the system relaxes. Third, the energy hierarchy is clarified: nuclear matter represents the most intense energy expression (furthest from the substrate’s ground state), descending through atoms, radiation, weak magnetic fields, to the substrate itself (most settled). Magnetism is energy at its most fundamental—still excited above the ground state but barely. The gravitational effect attributed to dark matter is gravity itself—the substrate’s intrinsic topology producing gradients independent of, and prior to, the baryonic matter those gradients collect. There is no missing particle. The search is for something that does not exist. I propose the term magnetic antimatter—the spacetime substrate in its pre-electromagnetic symmetric state—to replace a name that embeds a wrong assumption.
