Atherogenic Indices in Newly Diagnosed Patients of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Healthy Controls: A Comparative Study
Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder prevalent in women in the reproductive age group.Hormonal imbalance, inflammation, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia have been implicated in etiopathogenesis of the disease and its complications. These favour the development of an atherogenic environment. The current study was designed to compare the levels of atherogenicity (using surrogate markers; and atherogenic indices) in newly diagnosed, treatment nave, non-obese patients of PCOS and age matched healthy controls.Methodology: Treatment nave, newly diagnosed patients of PCOS and age matched healthy controls were recruited.Blood was collected in fasting state for estimation of glycemic plasma glucose and fasting lipid profile.Atherogenic Indices (LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, atherogenic coefficient, lipoprotein combined index and atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP)) were calculated using predefined formulas. Results: LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, Atherogenic coefficient, lipoprotein combined index and AIP were higher in patients of PCOS compared to age-matched healthy controls. Conclusion:Newly diagnosed non obese patients of PCOS are prone to increased atherogenicity which necessitates the need for regular monitoring of lipid parameters in these patients, irrespective of body mass index.
