Menopause: A Primer for Advanced Practice Nurses Caring for Women

Abstract
Menopause is a complex, multisystem transition that impacts cardiovascular, endocrine, neurocognitive, genitourinary, dermatologic, and immune function. This article reviews key physiological changes, clinical presentations, screening recommendations, and treatment options, including new US Food and Drug Administration–approved therapies. Advanced practice nurses (APNs)—including nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and certified midwives—are well-positioned to identify, evaluate, and manage menopause-related conditions through individualized, evidence-based care. Emphasis is placed on validated tools, patient education, and risk assessment to improve outcomes. While the article centers on APN practice, it acknowledges the vital roles of family physicians and obstetricians-gynecologists in providing collaborative, holistic care for midlife women.
