Bridging Skill and Employment Gaps in Higher Education: Implementation of NEP 2020 in South Salmara Mankachar District, Assam
The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) aims to transform India’s higher education system by emphasizing skill development, employability, multidisciplinary education, vocational training, and stronger industry-academia linkages. However, achieving these objectives is challenging in remote or under-resourced districts. This study investigates skill and employment gaps among higher education graduates in South Salmara-Mankachar, Assam, examines the extent of NEP 2020 implementation locally, and suggests strategies to address the gaps. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 200 students, 30 faculty members, and 10 local employers through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. The results indicate partial implementation of NEP 2020, with critical gaps in infrastructure, vocational training, soft skills development, and industry linkages. The study recommends strengthening institutional capacity, promoting skill-based centers, aligning curriculum with local job markets, and fostering industry partnerships. Findings provide insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and stakeholders seeking to enhance graduate employability in peripheral regions.
