Simulation based dynamic analysis of paddle aerator function in shrimp ponds
A paddle aerator is a vital component in intensive shrimp farming to maintain dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. This study aimed to evaluate the performance and energy consumption of paddle aerators through dynamic modeling analysis using a causal ex-post facto design. Water quality measurements in the ponds generally showed suitable salinity, pH, temperature, and DO ranges for shrimp cultivation. The analysis revealed that a 1 HP paddle aerator produced an average of 2.12 mgO₂/hour (1.68–2.89 mgO₂/hour) with gas pressure between 10.31–16.00 mmHg, while a 2 HP paddle aerator generated 3.20 mgO₂/hour (2.82–3.65 mgO₂/hour) with gas pressure of 10.05–14.56 mmHg. The estimated electrical load requirement ranged from 6.83–10.38 kW in Pond 1 and 6.59–7.71 kW in Pond 2. Results of dynamic modeling further indicated that DO production ranged from 1–2.75 mgO₂/hour at rotational speeds of 0–30 rpm/s, with power requirements of 8–10 kW. The study concludes that multiple 1 HP paddle aerators are more effective and energy-efficient than fewer 2 HP units. Moreover, dynamic modeling showed that DO production tends to stagnate after the tenth week of cultivation, accompanied by increasing power demand.
