Conceptual Framework for Integrating Construction 4.0 Technologies into the Integrated Design Process

The integrated design process (IDP) offers a strong foundation for early-stage collaboration, yet it still lacks a clear framework for integrating Construction 4.0 technologies and defining stakeholder roles throughout its phases. This gap prevents digital integration and also limits the architecture, engineering, and construction industry from achieving sustainability goals. This research has developed the Framework of IDP-Con4.0 Technologies based on the task–technology–stakeholder matrix for addressing these challenges and aligning emerging digital tools with core IDP tasks. The methodology involved 18 semistructured expert interviews, followed by thematic analysis and a relevance-based scoring of technologies on a 1–10 scale. Tasks were identified across five IDP phases, from predesign to construction administration, and linked to both digital and physical technologies. The findings highlight a strong emphasis on BIM and cloud platforms in the early design stages, with architects, project managers, and cost estimators who are playing key roles. The resulting framework defines responsibilities for each phase, identifies suitable technologies for completing tasks, and outlines when these tasks should be carried out. This structured interaction supports digital readiness and informed decision-making. A simulation of an educational building project demonstrated the practical application of the framework and highlighted its potential to improve coordination and support sustainability across environmental, social, and economic aspects. This study connects theory and real work by providing a clear, repeatable way to apply digital strategies in IDP workflows.
