Integrating BIM and GIS for Geospatial Data Governance in ASEAN: A Review

ABSTRACT In the current era of digital technologies, the integration of building information modelling (BIM) and geographic information system (GIS) has been shown to streamline the workflows and reduce costs in the built environment. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to synthesis evidence on BIM‐GIS integration and its implications for geospatial data governance in the ASEAN region. Using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 36 recent articles published between 2020 and 2025 were identified from Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google Scholar. The synthesis reveals four main themes involved, namely technical integration and data standards. The second theme is data governance, security and compliance. The third theme is application in infrastructure, smart cities and disaster management and theme four is ASEAN research gaps and challenges. The review highlights the need for an ASEAN geospatial governance framework that updates policy, sets regional technical standards and strengthens cybersecurity to ensure secure and interoperable geospatial data sharing.
