Nezuko’s bamboo muzzle differs from actual bamboo (Phyllostachys spp.)
The bamboo muzzle worn by Nezuko Kamado in the anime Demon Slayer differs from actual bamboo (Phyllostachys spp.) in terms of its internode proportions. This study compared internode lengths in anime depictions (n = 150) with empirical culm measurements of Phyllostachys spp. (n = 112). The ratio of adjacent to maximum internode length in the anime was 0.45 ± 0.11, whereas empirical measurements yielded significantly higher ratios in P. edulis and P. nigra var. henonis (0.94 ± 0.08). A mathematical model of the internode length distribution along a culm also indicated that the observed ratios of the muzzle could not be reproduced in real bamboo, supporting our conclusion. The methodological approach used here highlights its potential for use not only as teaching material in science and mathematics education but also in extracurricular activities. The findings should not be taken as criticism of the author, illustrators, or readers’ lack of understanding, but rather as filling gaps in science communication efforts by bamboo researchers. This study will serve as a step toward enhancing public awareness about bamboo.
