Optical Analysis of the Helios 44-2
This paper analyzes the optical performance and unique visual characteristics of the Helios 44-2 58mm lens. It focuses on the specific technical reasons why this Soviet-era design produces its famous swirly bokeh effect. The study examines how Petzval field curvature interacts with the mechanical vignetting caused by the lens barrel. While modern optics prioritize perfect sharpness, this report looks at how these older designs remain relevant for cinematic videography in 2026. By understanding the physics behind these optical flaws, researchers and filmmakers can better utilize legacy glass to achieve specific artistic results. The analysis concludes that the aesthetic value of the Helios 44-2 comes directly from its technical imperfections.
