High-quality wavefront control in high-energy laser using a robust dual-deformable-mirror adaptive optics system

High-repetition-rate nanosecond pulsed diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSLs) are widely sought after for scientific and industrial applications. Recently, a compact 100 Hz, 10 J DPSSL system based on an Nd:YAG active-mirror architecture was developed for room-temperature operation, but its beam quality was limited. To improve beam quality, a dual-deformable-mirror (DM) adaptive optics (AO) system was implemented. For collaborative DM control, a successive trust-region iterative method was developed. The proposed approach leverages the correction capability of multiple DMs in a stable manner, ensuring both high performance and robustness. Meanwhile, its physically intuitive and easily adjustable parameters facilitate rapid deployment of multi-DM AO systems in high-energy DPSSL facilities. Experiments on the developed system demonstrated a beam quality of ∼2.2/1.8 (X/Y) times the diffraction limit, with wavefront distortion reduced by more than one order of magnitude and peak energy density increased by more than 17-fold. The proposed control method offers a reliable framework for collaborative control of multiple DMs in high-energy laser systems and other advanced optical platforms, supporting applications that demand high beam quality with practical implementation costs.
