Sustainable recycling of end-of-life tyres : a life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis with practical applications
This study proposes a closed-loop approach for end-of-life tire granulates, reusing them to produce gym mats. After characterizing the granules, a shredding process was developed to ensure technological feasibility. A Life Cycle Assessment measured ecological benefits, while a Cost-Benefit Analysis assessed long-term financial and economic viability. Results show that, if properly prepared, tire granules can replace cellulose reinforcement in asphalt mixes. Ecologically, compared to artificial turf energy recovery, tire reuse offers significant advantages in reducing global warming potential and acidification. This scenario highlights both technological promise and sustainability benefits for tire recycling.
